PTE's mission is: To operate a professional theatre of high calibre for the entertainment & edification of a broad spectrum of people. To operate a school to encourage appreciation of theatre and to provide accessible, high quality, innovative drama education. To support the development of new plays. To foster theatre arts-related endeavours of others through use of our facilities and expertise.

Description

PTE offers five adult plays in it season as well as a play that is geared to children and youth over the holiday period that goes out on tour and is seen by more than 18,000 people outside of Winnipeg. The mainstage theatre seats 323 people in a crescent shape around the stage. A second stage (100 seating) is used by outside groups as a rental facility and by the PTE School. PTE's school offers classes for all ages and levels of experience. PTE maintains a 42,000 sq ft facility and estimates 100,000 people pass through the front doors.

History

PTE  has been in existence since 1972. It began as a theatre school and over the years has grown into one of Winnipeg's most vibrant theatres. Each season PTE produces a playbill of five contemporary plays -- most with a Canadian focus. It is nationally recognized for its commitment to the quality of the work on its stage and the support of local theatre artists. PTE supports new plays within its regular theatre season, with its Playwright's Unit and with its annual festival called the Carol Shields Festival of New Works.

Programs/Services

Adult Theatre Season Each year a 5-play season is chosen by PTE's Artistic Director and includes a range of comedies and drama with a focus on contemporary and Canadian playwrights.
Family Holiday Show PTE reaches out to children with its adaptation geared to children and families.  PTE was the first company to see the potential of Robert Munsch stories and has been adapting them to live theatre for many years. The 5-story/50 minute play is seen by 6-7,000 people at PTE's theatre.
Theatre for Young Audiences The PTE Family Holiday Show is one of the first pieces of professional theatre seen by Manitoba's youth. Beside the in-theatre shows, a Winnipeg and Provincial tour takes the play to schools from Gillam in the North to the US border and is seen by more than 18,000.
Playwright's Unit PTE continues to foster the growth of new plays. A new initiative brings writers at different levels together to mentor each other under the guidance of PTE's Artistic Director. Working as a unit they motivate each other and offer important and useful criticism.
PTE Theatre School PTE began as a theatre school and continues that tradition with a wide variety of classes of children, youth and adults at all levels of experience and skill. For the more dedicated there are "companies" that work towards year end performances.
