Mission

Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) is a professional theatre company solely devoted to young people. Our mission is to: Produce professional theatre that entertains, educates and advocates for children and youth. Provide training in theatre and related arts by professional artists and instructors. Portray the experiences of Canadian children through the development of new plays for performance at home and internationally.

Description

MTYP serves as a theatre resource for the children and youth of Manitoba by offering a vehicle for experiencing and developing an appreciation of theatre and an opportunity to receive training in the practice of theatre by professional artists and educators through our performance company, theatre school and theatre-in-education services.

History

Manitoba Theatre for Young People was originally founded in 1965 as Actors' Showcase and incorporated in January of 1977. In 1982, it was reconstituted by incoming Artistic Director, Leslee Silverman, as a professional company devoted to theatre for young people. In August 1999, MTYP realized a 14-year dream; its own home. The company moved into the CanWest Global Performing Arts Centre located at The Forks in the heart of Winnipeg.  MTYP has grown to become one of the most respected professional theatre companies in Canada.

Programs/Services

The Mainstage MTYP is the only professional theatre in Manitoba devoted solely to young audiences. MTYP's Mainstage season consisting of ten shows serves 125, 000+ children, teens, and parents. Located at The Forks, our 28,000 square foot, 325 flexible theatre is a one of a kind facility.
Theatre School MTYP operates the largest theatre school in Canada, where over 1,600 children and teens learn fundamental theatre performance techniques, as well as such related disciplines as movie making, animation, puppetry, musical theatre, and acting for the camera.
Aboriginal Arts Training and Mentorship Program The Arts Training & Mentorship Program is designed specifically for urban Aboriginal youth in Winnipeg. Currently, in its 8th year 600 Aboriginal children, teens and young adults now participate year round in film, theatre, and self-esteem and empowerment programs.
Drama Outreach MTYP workshops offer a playful and intuitive approach to learning that is based on a young person’s natural curiosity and desire to participate. Whether you are in pre-school, school-aged or an adult, MTYP specializes in bringing excellent drama education experiences to you.
Touring MTYP runs a successful touring program in collaboration with the Manitoba schools system, and now tours the province more frequently and to more locations than any other professional performing arts organization.
