Mission

The West End Cultural Centre is a dynamic not-for-profit arts organization enriching the lives of artists, audiences and the community through the sharing of music and culture.

Description

The West End Cultural Centre (WECC) is an iconic Winnipeg institution and music venue. We present an average of 70 concerts per year and support an additional 100 productions presented by artists and community organizations. In addition to our concert programming, we offer over 50 free arts education and engagement programs to youth living in Winnipeg's inner-city. Total attendance at the WECC facility and WECC events is over 35,000 per year.

History

In 1987, a team of volunteers turned an 80-year-old church in an inner-city neighbourhood into a community arts centre. The WECC opened to serve artists working outside the musical mainstream and fill a void in the Winnipeg presentation community. Founders believed that “the development of people-oriented, community-based institutions which touch the earth, will go a long way towards the successful emergence of a real Canadian culture.”

Programs/Services

WECC Concert Series Our concert series is the reason we've been named 'Venue of the Year' 5 times in the past decade at the Western Canadian Music Awards. We proudly present a diverse array of out-of-the mainstream artists each season, in a variety of genres and at all stages in their careers.
WECC Community Concert Series Held in partnership with local schools and other community based organizations the WECC presents 6-10 free performances each year. They engage children and youth as active participants and expose them to a range of musical cultures and traditions.
WECC Community Workshop Series Half-day workshops are offered to schools, after-school programs and youth serving agencies. Instructed by professional artists, these workshops offer youth to develop their own artistic abilities in the performing arts.
TUNE IN Program This music mentorship drop-in offers free instruction on drums, guitars and keyboards to youth between the ages of 12 and 19. Led by professional musicians twice a week throughout the school year, all instruments are provided and a healthy snack is served.
Community Arts Partnership Program The CAP program offers rent-free facility use and presentation mentorship to organizations whose programming increases access to the arts and/or supports emerging artists. There are 12 CAP programs available per year, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Community Celebrations The WECC presents two annual community celebrations. The Holiday Concert and Dinner invites 150 residents for a free concert and full turkey dinner with all the fixings. The two-day Ellice Street Festival is held in June, taking over Ellice Avenue with fun for the whole family.
